What is the history of the CAC®, the knife used by the French army?
The CAC® knife wasn't born by chance. It won a tender issued by the French Army to replace the Bivouac®, its renowned field knife. The goal was to design a more modern, more robust tool perfectly suited to the realities of contemporary operations. TB, drawing on its industrial expertise and innovative capabilities, rose to the challenge. By partnering with Philippe Perotti, a former special forces member and weapons handling expert, TB was able to incorporate concrete feedback from field experience. The result is a folding knife that excels in the three areas indicated by its name: Combat, Support, and Field. It officially became the standard-issue knife of the French Army in 2017, the ultimate mark of recognition.
Why is the CAC® a reference for the military and law enforcement?
For defense and security professionals, choosing equipment is not a matter of style, but of survival and effectiveness. CAC® has established itself as a benchmark because it was designed for them, with them.
- Uncompromising reliability: Every component, from the screw to the locking mechanism, has been tested to withstand the harshest treatment. It will never let you down.
- Safe design: The reinforced blade locking mechanism prevents accidental closure, even under heavy use. The glass breaker and strap cutter (on some models) are vital tools in emergency situations.
- Ergonomics designed for action: Its grip is secure and intuitive, even with gloves. Its quick one-handed opening/closing is a crucial tactical advantage.
What are the technical characteristics that make the CAC® so efficient?
The performance of the CAC® relies on precise material and technical choices, where every detail matters. It was designed to be the ultimate tool, a true "tactical Swiss Army knife".
What is special about its blade?
The blade is the heart of the knife. The CAC® blade is machined from a proprietary stainless steel: Nitrox®. This nitrogen-enriched steel offers a perfect balance between high corrosion resistance (essential in humid environments), excellent edge retention, and easy resharpening in the field. It is available in several finishes and profiles (smooth, mixed with serrations) to suit all needs, from precision cutting to rope cutting.
How does its locking mechanism work?
Safety is paramount. The CAC® uses an "Axis Lock®" type mechanism, redesigned and reinforced by TB Outdoor. A transverse metal bar, pushed by springs, firmly locks the base of the blade in the open position. This system is not only one of the most robust on the market, but it also has the advantage of being perfectly ambidextrous. Unlocking is simple and safe, without ever placing your fingers in the path of the blade.
What makes its handle so strong?
The CAC® handle is built to last. It's constructed from two scales screwed onto a stainless steel plate. Depending on the model, these scales are made of PA6 FV (a fiberglass-reinforced polyamide, highly resistant to impacts and fluids) or G10 (a composite of fiberglass and epoxy resin, offering exceptional grip even when wet). This construction ensures unparalleled structural rigidity and incorporates additional tools such as a hardened steel glass breaker or, on certain versions, an ingenious corkscrew.
How to choose the right CAC® model for your needs?
The CAC® collection is available in a variety of styles to suit your specific needs, whether you're in the military, hiking, survival, or simply looking for a unique gift. Here are a few pointers to help you choose:
- For the versatile adventurer: The standard model with a mixed blade (smooth and serrated) is an excellent choice. It offers maximum versatility. Colors like army green or coyote are perfect for bushcraft.
- For the tactical user: The model with a black, anti-reflective blade is recommended for its discretion. The S200 version includes a strap cutter and a glass breaker, essential tools in emergency situations.
- For the connoisseur of fine pieces: The model equipped with a corkscrew is an ingenious and original civilian version, perfect for camping or enjoying an aperitif. It's the ideal gift, combining military history with user-friendly functionality.
